The other night, I was going through Amazon.com looking for CDs that I should get. I was browsing through the Letters To Cleo releases and discovered that they have broken up (where I have been??) and Kay Hanley (formerly the lead singer of LTC) has released her debut CD. I’ve always enjoyed listening to LTC, especially Wholesale Meats and Fish (it’s the only LTC CD that I own), so I thought I’d check out her CD (her singing/songwriting talents are also featured on the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack).
I can’t say that there is anything really ground-breaking on Cherry Marmalade, but I think that’s why I like it. I bought the CD because I’m a fan of Kay’s voice and her lyrics, if she would have changed that formula, I might have been disappointed. This Dreadful Life and Fall are my favorite tunes, but I enjoyed listening to the whole CD. The lyrics definitely seem to be on a more personal note than anything I’ve heard from LTC (something the other reviews noted as well). The songs are a bit more laid back than Wholesale Meat and Fish, I don’t know how it compares to the rest of the LTC albums, as I don’t own any others (yet). I’d certainly recommend her CD to anyone who likes the LTC sound. Two other reviews that are linked from Kay’s web site can be found here and here.
